Southwest Ridge is marked in yellow. |
I wanted to get a hike/peak in and Cervidae Peak is always a good choice. It had been almost a year since my last lap up this local classic, so it was time to visit an old friend. I decided to go up via the southwest ridge that I had not yet done. Other than one trip up the west ridge and one up the rocks route, I've always done the standard southeast ridge. I'll also add, this peak is now officially named thanks to Dan Robbins and Tom Lopez.

Looking up the SW Ridge. |
It was a fine cold morning for some Cervidae suffering so my pace was quick. I parked in the pullout just after the bridge and started up. I soon found that a fence had been put up and it looked pretty new. Maybe to keep the deer away from the highway?

Gate in the fence. |
There are a few gates and gaps, so it is passable if you start on the west side closer to the bridge.

Looking down the SW Ridge. |
After about a mile and a half, the SW ridge joins the point where the SE ridge turns north, toward the summit.

I'm still partial to the SE ridge, but this was a nice variation.

Summit view looking south. |
It was real nice and cold, just the way I like my Cervidae suffering.
